What it Means to be a YMCA Teen Achiever
Participants in the Black Achievers Program meet weekly or bi-weekly throughout the year at our Northside YMCA. The YMCA Black Achievers Program faces educational disparity head-on by equipping teens with skills and competencies needed to gain acceptance to and graduation from institutions of higher learning, eventually leading to successful entry into the workforce.
GOALS:
- Provide positive experiences and life examples that will inspire youth to set and achieve their goals;
- Focus community attention on the development of urban youth for employment and meaningful career opportunities; and
- Recognize and promote excellence.
CAREER AWARENESS - Black Achievers offers students a chance to experience the 'real' working world via program elements such as:
- Speakers Bureau
- Career Clusters
- Business & Industry Presentations
- Job Shadowing
- Career Seminars
ACADEMIC SUPPORT:
- Tutoring
- College Fairs
- College Scholarships
- Mentoring
- Black College Tour (pictured right)
LEADERSHIP SKILLS:
- Fundraising
- Community Service
