The Young Leaders Academy, a public, free charter school, is committed to developing the leadership capabilities of our students through an innovative curriculum, high expectations and a character-based approach to learning.

Located in the city of Milwaukee on our YMCA Northside campus, the YMCA Young Leaders Academy (YLA) was established in 2002 and serves children, grades K4-8.

First class education for the college bound student

The Academy’s educational goal is to prepare students to be creative, intuitive, and analytical thinkers. It is also our goal to prepare students who become college graduates. Proven methods are used to increase student performance including:

• MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing
provides one-on-one assessment of each child and plans for their academic growth over time.
• Small class sizes (1:12 student to teacher/staff ratio)
• A longer school day and year-round school calendar
• Wraparound before- and after-school programming, including tutoring

• Caring, knowledgeable and high-performing teachers and staff
• A rigorous curriculum devoted to the basics
• Enhanced offerings including foreign language, music and science labs
• Students are grouped based on academic and leadership ability in order to individualize instruction
• Gifted and Talented programming, as well as accelerated learning options

Every part of the school day reinforces the values and expectations of both students and YLA educators. Initiatives such as the Leaders Come Alive curriculum, honor society, and peer mentoring create an atmosphere of leadership, pride, self-discipline, and respect. The unique culture of YLA helps students reach their fullest potential and prepares them for college and beyond.

Young Leaders Academy (YLA) students are performing higher than their peers on state Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Evaluation tests, showing the superior results of a YLA education. 2008 results are noted below.
