Four years ago, Sponsor-A-Scholar matched me up with my mentor, Kurt, and we’ve been close friends ever since. We always have a great time together, whether we go golfing, to the movies, bowling, or even just out to lunch. However, the main thing that Kurt has helped me do throughout my entire high school career was to help me stay at my best with my academics.
Since my freshman year at Bay View, Kurt has always been there to make sure that I kept up with my assignments, studied for tests, and always put my best effort into anything that I did. Last year, Kurt helped me pass my advanced algebra and trigonometry class with a “B” average, which is something that I didn’t believe that I was capable of. After countless hours of extra studying, I was finally able to understand the material. If it hadn’t been for Kurt, I may have given up on even trying to pass that class; I may have given up on trying to understand the given material, but Kurt never gave up on me, and more importantly, he’s taught me to never give up on myself.
I am currently one of the top ten students in the senior class at Bay View High School, and I owe a lot of my success to Kurt, and to Sponsor-A-Scholar. My high school GPA has never been lower than a 3.0. I’m not trying to brag or sound hubristic in any way, but I’m just trying to illustrate to you how my mentor, and this program in general, has helped me to triumph through high school, and guide me on my way into the future; and as I close this article, I would like to give my sincerest thanks to Kurt, and the staff and former staff of Sponsor-A-Scholar. Words can’t explain how much I appreciate you all. Thank you.
