Research has shown that the most critical asset in helping young people succeed is the presence of a caring adult in each of their lives. Unfortunately, many of the central city youth in Milwaukee lack sufficient positive adult support and role models. Through the YMCA Mentoring Programs, volunteer mentors provide the crucial one-on-one interaction that can make the difference in our young people's chances for success. The YMCA administers two academic mentoring programs: One on One and Sponsor-A-Scholar.

We're looking for 400 new mentors by the end of this year. Please be the difference in a young person's life! Learn more/let us know you are interested here.

Mentors needed!

Mentors are Positively Milwaukee - Interview with TMJ4's Carol Meekins and Cavalier "Chevy" Johnson, a long-time mentoring participant, about the benefits of being involved in YMCA mentoring programs.

An after-school academic mentoring
program for middle school students

Click here for more One on One information

The One on One Program matches urban middle school students with caring adult mentors recruited from the community and from corporate sponsors. Mentors serve as role models, coaches, and friends as they help their students develop their fullest academic and personal potential.
  • Mentors meet with their students once a week after school at one of eleven supervised sites throughout the city, including sites at the Downtown YMCA.
  • Most of the One on One sites use a research-based literacy curriculum called HOSTS (Help One Student to Succeed). This curriculum is individualized for each student and helps them to achieve major improvements in reading. Other One on One sites build students' academic skills using the students' homework.
  • Students learn important life skills, such as goal setting, as they work towards improving their reading levels or GPAs.

Sponsor-A-Scholar links academically promising, motivated students from low-income families with caring adult mentors. Along with other community collaborators, financial sponsors, and the program's supportive staff, the mentors make dreams of a college education come true.

  • Scholars join the program as freshman and become part of a supportive peer group throughout their high school years.
  • Mentors encourage and guide their scholars on their paths to college. They meet with their students once a month at mutually convenient times for activities in the community.
  • Sponsor-A-Scholar boasts of a 98.7% high school graduation rate for its scholars, and 95% of the high school graduates enroll in post-secondary education.
  • Scholars who complete the program and enroll in college receive $5,000 of financial support from Sponsor-A-Scholar, distributed incrementally over the course of their college careers.
  • Since the first Sponsor-A-Scholar class graduated from high school in 1999, the program counts over 95 college graduates, including 29 who have enrolled in graduate programs such as law, social work and psychology.
  • This year the program will serve 230 high school students and 185 college students.
  • Scholars participate in service projects and have the opportunity to join student-led leadership clubs such as TAC (Teen Action Council) and/or YHELP (YMCA Humane Education and Leadership Program). Click here for more information on YHELP.
