CDC History

Having been created in 1992, the YMCA - Community Development Center (CDC) is one of Milwaukee's most established community and economic development organizations.  The CDC was designed to provide leadership on a wide variety of community issues and has an impressive track record to show for its efforts.  Below are just a few of the YMCA-CDC accomplishments during its start up years.

  • Operated the highly acclaimed One on One mentoring program.   One on One was a collaboration between 13 MPS middle and K-8 schools and dozens of area businesses.
  • Spearheaded the establishment of the Parklawn YMCA in collaboration with the city of Milwaukee Housing Authority - as an outgrowth of neighborhood calls for positive recreation alternatives for area children.
  • Coordinated the Hang Tough Milwaukee drug education and prevention program targeted at middle school aged youth - resulting in approximately 2,000 children in 35 Hang Tough clubs.
  • Revived the Youth in Government program which brought young leaders to the state capitol to convene the YMCA Model Legislature.  This program continues to this day.
  • Working with neighborhood residents, the YMCA - CDC helped to establish the Holton Youth Center in the Riverwest neighborhood.

Community outreach and involvement is extremely important for the Community Development Center.
